Now that summer is (finally) upon us…I’ve selected some of my favorite summer beauty products to help transition into warmer hues and sunny days!
- Essie – Cocktails and Coconuts and Clambake nail polishes ($8.50)
- Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer – Radiance ($33)
- St. Tropez Gradual Tan Anti-Ageing Multi-Action Face ($35)
- Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15 – in Honey ($22.50)
- Urban Decay’s Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss – in Streak ($20)
- Josie Maran’s Coconut Water Color Cheek Gelée – in Poppy Paradise ($22)
- Mac eye shadow – in Mythology ($15)
- Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Eau de Toilette rollerball ($26)
- Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray ($37)
Essie nail polishes are always my first choice in nail lacquer – I find the brush to be the easiest to maneuver for those DIY manicurists and find that my polish doesn’t chip as fast compared to other brands. For those who aren’t looking for a bright color, Essie’s nude ‘Cocktails and Coconuts’ is a great hue for summer and looks beautiful against sun-kissed skin. If you’re tough on your nails like me, an added bonus is you can’t tell when it starts to slightly chip after 4-5 days. I also love their ‘Clambake’ – an orange-red hue that really stands out against contrasting colors like purple, green and blue. I will add that this particular shade is slightly more transparent than some others so I recommend three thin coats. My last suggestion for nail polish is Essie’s ‘Good to go!’ top coat. Regardless of what color you end up using, I have found this top coat to be the quickest drying as well as most successful in preventing chipping. Sometimes, if I find that the color starts to dull after a few days, I’ll go back over my nails with another thin coat to bring back the shine!
Who doesn’t love a nice, subtle glow? I use Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer – Radiance year-round. While it’s not overly expensive, it’s also not cheap ($33 for the 1.7 oz. at Sephora.com) so I won’t wear it every day. Apply the primer after your moisturizer but before any foundation or face powder. If you are going for a more natural look or aren’t a fan of a lot of face makeup, this primer looks fantastic alone as well!
Looking to preserve that youthful skin but want some color on your face for the summer? I recommend trying St. Tropez Gradual Tan Anti-Ageing Multi-Action Face. The reason I love this product over some others is the gradual tanning (so less risk of ending up with streaks all over your face!) and it is also anti-ageing. So not only are you getting the benefit by tanning your face sans harmful UV rays, but you are doing it even more youthful justice with this moisturizer thanks to the anti-ageing ingredients. Added bonus: the lotion boasts its Aromaguard™ – an technology that helps reduce the self tanner scent by at least 70 percent. I still tend to put it on at the end of the day (twice a week) so in the morning I can go about my normal skin care and makeup routine.
Pout protection (with a hint of color)
So we’ve protected our face, but now we need to take care of those lips! Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15 is a nice option for a moisturizing, SPF with sheer color for lips. I like ‘Honey’ and ‘Coral’ for summer but there is a selection of 10 shades to choose from so you can select what works best for your skin tone and other seasons.
For a more polished look, try Urban Decay’s Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss. It goes on really smooth, isn’t sticky, and is very moisturizing. For summer, I absolutely love the color ‘Streak’ – it’s a coral-peach shade (are you seeing a pattern here?) but it’s fairly sheer. If you are looking for a super bright look – this isn’t for you. And since it is a gloss, you’ll likely have to reapply after eating or drinking.
I always feel better, more ‘alive’ when I have a little pink on my cheeks. I absolutely love Josie Maran’s Coconut Water Color Cheek Gelee – and for summer, Poppy Paradise is the perfect shade! There are eight different shade options so you can switch it up based on your skin tone, or the season. It’s super hydrating, easily blended and doesn’t stain your fingertips. It’s meant to last for 14 hours, but I typically reapply after 8 hours if I want some all day color. It looks fairly natural, but can be applied in layers if you’re looking for more pigment.
Eyes that pop
No matter your eye color, Mythology eye shadow by Mac is sure to bring out the color in your eyes. This coppery, shimmery, highly pigmented color works well in the summer and fall. I find that I like it by itself with just mascara in the summer, and then I make it more fall appropriate by adding a bronze shadow in the crease of my eyelid.
If you’re looking for a new scent for the summer (I need a new scent for every season!) I recommend Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Eau de Toilette. I tend to buy the rollerball so I can bring it with me to wedding, parties, etc. It’s very floral, musky and warm. If you are more of a sweet scent person, this might not be for you. This scent is also great for spring.
Pump it up
For those of us not blessed with thick, voluminous hair, Oribe’s Thick Dry Finishing Spray is truly ‘uplifting’! Ha. For summer hair that falls flat halfway through the day, pump up your volume and add some thickness to your hair by spraying at the roots and tousling with fingertips. I recommend parting your hair to the sides and middle to get an all over application. It should only be sprayed on dry hair or hair that is 90% dry – and finish that last 10% with a blow drier.
I hope you find this helpful! Please feel free to pass along your favorite summer beauty products!
